Emma & Alex’s Engagement Session Overlooking Zion from Kolob Terrace
In early June, I met up with Emma and Alex for their engagement session just off Kolob Terrace Road — one of the most stunning and peaceful areas on the outskirts of Zion National Park. They had traveled in from out of state to experience Zion together for the first time, and this spot, tucked away in the hills with wide views back into the cliffs of Zion, turned out to be the perfect place.
The weather was moody in the best way. Thick clouds rolled in over the cliffs, with breaks of soft light that made everything feel cinematic. The grass was greener than usual for this time of year — June can sometimes be dry in Southern Utah, but a stretch of rain had made the landscape feel fresh and alive.
A Quiet Spot with Big Views
We found a beautiful open clearing, away from any trails or popular overlooks — a place where the sounds of wind and distant thunder felt louder than anything else. You could see the cliffs of Zion in the distance, layered and glowing under the shifting sky. It was quiet and open, with a mix of tall grass and wild sage. It wasn’t a named viewpoint or a mapped location — just a place that felt right.
That kind of simplicity, that real connection to the land, is what makes sessions like this special. Emma and Alex immediately relaxed into the space. There was no one around, no pressure, just room to breathe and be themselves.
Stormy Skies and Soft Light
Not every couple would be excited about storm clouds during their session, but Emma and Alex were completely on board — and it paid off. The dramatic skies added emotion and contrast to their images, and the diffused light softened everything perfectly. There were moments where the sun peeked through and lit up the cliffs, but the real mood came from the heavy skies above and the way the light wrapped around them.
The storm stayed distant, just enough to give us drama without the downpour. That’s the kind of unpredictability that makes each session out here a little different — and often, a little more magical.
A Session That Felt Like Them
One of the best parts of this session was how natural everything felt. Emma and Alex weren’t overly posed or directed — they just moved through the space together. They laughed, ran through the grass, and leaned into the quiet of the landscape. It felt so amazing to capture their love.
I always aim for engagement sessions that reflect the couple along with the setting. Zion is beautiful, yes — but it’s their connection that makes the photos work.
Planning Your Engagement Session Around Zion
If you’re thinking about an engagement session in the Zion area, consider looking just beyond the main canyon. The surrounding areas — like Kolob Terrace, East Zion, and the high desert mesas — offer incredible views, more privacy, and a chance to create something that feels unique to you.
Whether you’re hoping for golden desert light or a moody sky like Emma and Alex’s day, there’s always something powerful about photographing couples in this kind of raw, open space.
